What is Feng Shui and How to Apply It

Discover what feng shui is, how it influences your well-being, and how you can apply it at home to create more harmonious, balanced, and functional spaces.

Feng shui is an ancient practice that addresses something we often overlook: how the place we live affects us. It emerged in ancient China and revolves around a key idea: seeking harmony between people and their surroundings. It aims to ensure that vital energy—what the Chinese call Chi—flows smoothly within spaces. And when that happens, they say, everything improves: health, mood, relationships, even money.

Now, what exactly is feng shui? Why has it become so popular in today's interior design? Perhaps because, deep down, we all feel when a place "does us good."

Where does Feng Shui come from?

The word Feng Shui It literally means "wind and water," two elements closely linked to the movement of energy in Chinese culture. This discipline has over 3,000 years of history. Initially, it was used to find the best burial site for emperors, but over time, it was also applied to homes, temples, and even cities.

Its basis is Taoist thought, which sees the universe as something that is always changing. The balance between opposing forces—Yin and Yang—is fundamental. It also relies on the five elements (water, wood, fire, earth, and metal) and a type of map called Bagua, which is used to study how energy is distributed in a place.

The keys to Feng Shui

Yin and Yang: the balance between opposites

Everything in Feng Shui revolves around balance. Yin represents passive, dark, and cold. Yang, on the other hand, represents active, bright, and warm. In a well-thought-out environment, there's a mix of both. For example, quiet areas for resting and livelier ones for socializing or working. It's not about having everything perfectly symmetrical, but rather ensuring nothing is too out of place.

Chi: that energy that is noticeable even if it is not seen

He Chi It's a subtle energy that permeates everything. If it flows well, we feel it: there's peace, enthusiasm, and mental clarity. If it stagnates or becomes blocked, it's also noticeable: fatigue, tension, and pointless arguments. Feng Shui seeks to free this flow, allowing the energy to "breathe."

The five elements and how they relate to each other

Each element represents a different energy:

  • Water: fluidity, intuition. It is present in fountains, mirrors, or deep colors.
  • Wood: growth, new ideas. Reflected in plants, green or brown objects.
  • Fire: energy, passion. Appears in candles, lights, and colors like red or orange.
  • Land: containment, balance. Seen in stones, ceramics, and warm tones.
  • Metal: order, clarity. It is represented by metals and colors such as white or gray.

When combined well, they create an environment that sustains us. Neither too cold nor too stuffy.

The Bagua Map: A Guide to Observing Your Home

The Bagua is a nine-area grid applied to the floor plan of your home or room. Each area represents a part of your life: from career to love to health. For example, if you want to activate the abundance zone, you can add healthy plants, purple objects, or wooden elements.

Feng Shui at home: where to start

The entrance

It's called "the mouth of Chi" because it's where energy enters. A clean, tidy, well-lit entrance already marks a before and after. Sometimes just changing the doormat or removing things that are in the way completely changes the feeling upon arrival.

The bedroom

This space is key to a good night's sleep. Ideally, the bed should have a backrest, not be directly aligned with the door, and should not have mirrors reflecting it. It's also a good idea to avoid visual clutter. Anything that promotes calm helps.

The kitchen

It's the center of vitality and health. The important thing is that it's clean, that it works well, and that the fire (the stove) isn't directly in front of the water (the sink), as this can cause an energy shock.

The bathroom

It's considered a point where energy can escape. Therefore, it's recommended to close the toilet lid, fix any leaks, and add elements that stabilize the space, such as ceramic tiles or weighted rugs.

Does it help to apply Feng Shui?

Those who try it often notice significant changes: they sleep better, are more focused, and feel more comfortable in their homes. They also report that opportunities open up, stress decreases, and relationships feel more fluid. Although Feng Shui isn't a hard science, its effects are connected to what we know today about how our environment influences our behavior.

And today? Does it make sense to continue using it?

Today, Feng Shui coexists with styles such as minimalism and sustainable architecture. It is applied in homes, offices, commercial premises, and even gardens. The idea of designing with emotional well-being in mind, not just aesthetics, is becoming increasingly important.
